Who Games in 6mm?

Hi Chaps,

I was wondering how many of you game in 6mm? One of the reasons that I have never really bothered with this scale is because not a lot of people seem to blog about it! Visually I am sure it looks effective en masse but is it any ones preferred scale?

The reason I ask is because I would like to war game with my son, maybe DBA (which version is it now...2.2 or 3.0...or 7.9?). Baccus seem affordable (I am on a budget as usual) and I thought that this may provide a welcome distraction from 28mm? How do you represent a character in this scale? Or do you not bother? Black Powder and Hail Caesar are also in my library so your advice would be most helpful.

My last question is does anyone scratch build their own terrain? Is it simply not worth bothering? Balsa houses in 6mm?

Thanks in advance, I really am looking forward to getting some actual games in  before I start my 28mm Back of Beyond armies in 28mm this summer.

  1. Hello,
I have three Baccus DBA armies. Pete Berry is a friend of mine. He would probably build you a couple of DBA armies at low cost. I prefer the original DBA to be honest. Not been able to read my version 3.0 at the moment. It's a cracking game.
    Oh Baccus also do buildings.
What about 2mm as a scale. Very cheap from Irregular Miniatures and the do buildings in this scale.

    1. Hi Simon,
Baccus do seem to be the best 6mm on the market and its good to see someone who uses them for DBA

    2. Most of my DBA is in 15mm. Got quite a few armies over the years. I have expanded greatly on my late Romes using two armies as starters. I just add some bases now and then. Doing some new bases so I can use with the old Warmaster rules down the club. NRWG of Colours fame.

  3. I also play in 6mm. And as already suggested The Joy of Six is a good place to start.

I will be running a game on my blog using 6mm WW1 Aircraft in the summer which you might want to check. I was assembling some of the Heroics and Ros planes today (very fiddly) They are not done so very well but will suffice.

The first Black powder game I player was in 6mm so I know it will work very easily in that scale or any other.

As for terrain in 6mm I have built my own in the past and am thinking of building some for next years shows (only 3 shows so not such a biggie.) There are lots of companies making terrain buildings out there mostly in resin, I would have a quick eBay scan to see what is easy to get and take it from there.

There really are loads of choices in this scale if you can be bothered to search for them.

  4. I play in 6mm solo though I don't often blog about it. Its good for a kitchen table and quick games where space is an issue.

    Cheers

  5. I have 6mm forces for several conflicts from 1914 to 1980s. I've gamed in this scale for nearly 40 years!

  6. Several of my gaming club members including myself play Napoleonic's in 6mm currently with Black Powder and find it to be a fun and enjoyable experience. We are now at the point where our collections allows us to deploy whole Corps to the battlefield.

  8. This blog, the blog with no name, has some good 6mm posts: http://walladvantage2.blogspot.com.au/

I am thinking of getting back into this scale. The reason I got out was I wanted to have a larger figures to paint (I went to 15mm which still provides a good size to field large armies at a reasonable cost).

All my DBA is 15mm and it is a great system. I've thought about doing some DBA using 1/72nd figures - they are cheap and of good quality.
