20mm on 25mm bases...

Hi Chaps,

I have a few unpainted 20mm Hat Germans so I thought I would base a few up on 25mm bases to see what they look like....? Once the figures have been PVA'd they are fairly tough and the extra large base should also help protect them but I am torn whether to invest in some 28mm? What do you fellows do? Also is there any good sites to help one scratch build 20mm buildings? I am even at the point of molding my own doors and windows so that I can just glue these onto the shells of buildings...the card and the green stuff are waiting but again a tutorial would help.

The cost of plastics are a fraction of the metal, if I had the knowledge I would put a poll on here and let you guys decide, my eyes are not what they were blah blah, you have probably wrestled with the scale question many times so what did you fellows go for?

I look forward to your replies, in the mean time I am ordering some paint and LOTS of 25mm bases.

Thanks for looking.

  1. As a solo gamer, I would say go for 20mm, for the cost of just one smallish 28mm force you can defenitely build several for all the main nations...
Also I find that for modern games, the ranges of weapons always look so short when playing with 28mm... using a smaller scale just looks better. Just try playing FoW in 6mm...

  3. Thanks Chaps, good points and common sense. I will try to put my love of 28mm aside for this one. I just bought "Contemptible little Armies" 3rd edition from Brigade games in the US..."23 with postage! Ouch.

  4. They have certainly got plenty of room on those base, that said they look perfectly fine to me. I base the majority of my 28mm miniatures on 25mm bases.

  5. Thanks Michael, I just wanted to pick them up with the base, its hard to respect 20mm plastic for some reason...so I will put more effort into painting and basing them. Now I need to learn how to photograph them!

  6. Started my WWI in 20mm plastic because of the cost, 25mm bases will just make them look nicer and easier to pick up. If there were hard plastic WW1 in 28mm I'd be almost tempted to suggest this but really unless you have lots of room to game the size makes more than platoon scale hard to do.

  7. Your right about the size of the table for 28mm Chris but if someone made 28mm WW1 I would buy them anyway....its strange that this period has not yet been touched by any manufacturer yet we have zombies!?
