Whats happened at Games Workshop?

My son has recently attended a local club where it seems everyone plays Warhammer 40 000. Naturally he wanted to have some figures of his own (he had been using his bigger brothers), so off we went to a Games workshop stockist....

It took some time for the initial shock to wear off but really I still cant believe it-up to £15 for a figure because it had special abilities in the game?? The army boxes started at £65 and a box of 5 was £15....even my son who was really keen to start his own army refused to part with his piggy bank of savings at those prices.

So what to do? 20mm Hat to the rescue! My son is on the Plastic soldier website as I speak decideing which to order, thank god forHat.

Will post some pics later.

  1. '£15 for a figure because it had special abilities in the game' ..... Jeez, I've heard it all now. That's just plain ridiculous! Thank God for HaT indeed!

  2. It's about time you saw the light. I used to like GW because it was the only game in town (almost literally). Now, I've switched to 15mm for fantasy and sci-fi and 20mm plastics for everything else. I can build an entire army (infantry heavy) for almost any WWII combatant for 15 pounds. I can build any warband in Song of Blades and Heroes sometimes for half of that. Buy good metal and plastic, play good games and let GW price themselves out of the reach of most leadheads.

  5. I keep on thinking that GW will price themselves out the market but they keep going, it's a big hungry monster to feed now, lots of overheads and corporate thingys.

Shows your bous' got his head srewed on.

  6. I honestly can't believe how much the price of a standard LOTR plastic fig has gone up by over the past year. I'm guessing they're getting ready for an influx of new players following the Hobbit movie (which they've got the license for), - those poor sods won't know any different, haven't seen the recent rises and won't know about all the historical alternatives (like GB plastic Vikings and Saxons).

  7. You are all right...maybe its the overheads but the prices are outrageous, the recent single figure prices will put people off gaming forever and maybe put them out of business.
Black powder using plastic 20mm for the near future for myself, hope more people adopt this scale?

  8. Sadly, this is nothing new. GW has been ripping people off with their prices practically since they started. :(
