20mm painting quality (my eyes...my eyes!)

Morning All,

I was looking through my stash of pictures (no not that sort) when I came across some that I had downloaded in the past-and this stuff is just 20mm figure porn....I have not been able to think of anything else! Now this has presented me with a couple of problems. Firstly my stuff is utter pants in comparison and secondly how do I learn to paint like this?

Apologies to the man who created these works of art-I think the Napoleonic figure was done by an Italian chap? Anyway these are stunning.

Having had an almost religious experience at what can be achieved with 20mm I now may attempt to up my game from base colours and a diluted wash...I suppose its all down to what we are using the figures for? I am certainly going to spend a little more time on my 20mm figures and afford them a little more respect...I'm off to look for the blog that these pics came from for more inspiration. Have a good Monday.

  1. They're nice alright, if they're from the guy I think he spends hours on them and sometimes we can't do that, I'm currently painting 20mm myself and they're killing me.

  2. Hi Mr Angry, I understand what you mean it is probably my age but I struggle to pick out the detail. I think if we persevere though we will get more used to the techniques required to produce decent looking figures...or go blind first!

  3. From far enough away my stuff looks just as good. Even better without my glasses on! Not that I could come close to the standard in the photos, but I always try to remember that I'm painting wargame toys which are intended for use by ham-fisted friends and may suffer damage. Not spending days on each one somehow makes that easier to deal with!

  4. Hi,
yes I think there is a divide between modelling and wargaming but it is very blurred. Hence we try for maximum detail (washes etc) with the least (or quickest) effort... its hard to decide as too what we are actually aiming for
